Chapter Seven
The Hiding Place
âThe nerve of him!â Brooke was almost spitting she was so mad. She threw herself on Evaâs bed.
âHeâs such a . . . a . . .â
âSnake!â
âYeah. Thatâs the word. At least I think itâs the word,â Eva said. She put her hands on her hips and snorted. âHeâs not going to tell on us if he gets to see the secret room? How dare he threaten us?â
âThe nerve of him!â Brooke said again. âI donât like him.â
âI donât trust him.â
âYou know what I think, Eva?â
âThat heâs going to try to steal the locket?â
âMaybe. He was too curious about the secret room and the locket.â
âThen we have to hide it.â
âThat should be easy enough. There have to be a gazillion places to hide something as small as a locket.â
The two girls sat on the bed, legs crossed, chins in their hands.
âWhat about hiding it somewhere in my bedroom?â
âToo obvious. Thatâs the first place heâd look.â
âWhat about the kitchen?â
Brooke shook her head. âFrau Ederâs in there too much. And what if she found it and showed it to him? You know heâll be getting all friendly with her because of all that good cooking.â
âWe could hide it in the library.â
âMaybe. But my mom and your grandfather spend too much time in there.â
The girls both sighed.
âWell, maybe there arenât a gazillion places to hide it.â
âYou know,â Brooke finally said. âThe safest place is in the secret room. He doesnât even know where the room is.â
Eva perked up. âYouâre right. Even if he thinks thatâs where we hid it, heâd have to figure out where the room is.â
âHeâll never even find the door!â
âUnless we let him play hide and seek with us.â Eva laughed at her good joke.
âWell, Iâm never playing hide and seek with that creepy guy.â
The girls slipped out into the hallway. They could hear Herr Muellerâs and Mrs. Masonâs voices coming from the library. Eva quietly opened the attic door and the girls crept up the steps.
Eva crawled into the wardrobe first and opened the half door. Brooke followed her friend through the soft fur coats and into the half-lighted hallway.
âNow where would be a good place?â Brooke said.
âNot the drawers. Thatâs the first place someone would look.â
âHow about the cookie tin? Or the teapot?â
Eva shook her head. âToo easy.â
They studied the room. Unfortunately, there just werenât many places to hide something.
âIâve got it!â Brooke snapped her fingers. She took the locket from Eva and draped it over the dollâs head. She tucked the locket and chain under the dollâs dress. She smiled. âYou canât even see a trace of it.â
âPerfect!â
âNow letâs get out of here before your grandfather comes to get us for dinner.â
