Chapter Seven

The Hiding Place

“The nerve of him!” Brooke was almost spitting she was so mad. She threw herself on Eva’s bed.

“He’s such a . . . a . . .”

“Snake!”

“Yeah. That’s the word. At least I think it’s the word,” Eva said. She put her hands on her hips and snorted. “He’s not going to tell on us if he gets to see the secret room? How dare he threaten us?”

“The nerve of him!” Brooke said again. “I don’t like him.”

“I don’t trust him.”

“You know what I think, Eva?’

“That he’s going to try to steal the locket?”

“Maybe. He was too curious about the secret room and the locket.”

“Then we have to hide it.”

“That should be easy enough. There have to be a gazillion places to hide something as small as a locket.”

The two girls sat on the bed, legs crossed, chins in their hands.

“What about hiding it somewhere in my bedroom?”

“Too obvious. That’s the first place he’d look.”

“What about the kitchen?”

Brooke shook her head. “Frau Eder’s in there too much. And what if she found it and showed it to him? You know he’ll be getting all friendly with her because of all that good cooking.”

“We could hide it in the library.”

“Maybe. But my mom and your grandfather spend too much time in there.”

The girls both sighed.

“Well, maybe there aren’t a gazillion places to hide it.”

“You know,” Brooke finally said. “The safest place is in the secret room. He doesn’t even know where the room is.”

Eva perked up. “You’re right. Even if he thinks that’s where we hid it, he’d have to figure out where the room is.”

“He’ll never even find the door!”

“Unless we let him play hide and seek with us.” Eva laughed at her good joke.

“Well, I’m never playing hide and seek with that creepy guy.”

The girls slipped out into the hallway. They could hear Herr Mueller’s and Mrs. Mason’s voices coming from the library. Eva quietly opened the attic door and the girls crept up the steps.

Eva crawled into the wardrobe first and opened the half door. Brooke followed her friend through the soft fur coats and into the half-lighted hallway.

“Now where would be a good place?” Brooke said.

“Not the drawers. That’s the first place someone would look.”

“How about the cookie tin? Or the teapot?”

Eva shook her head. “Too easy.”

They studied the room. Unfortunately, there just weren’t many places to hide something.

“I’ve got it!” Brooke snapped her fingers. She took the locket from Eva and draped it over the doll’s head. She tucked the locket and chain under the doll’s dress. She smiled. “You can’t even see a trace of it.”

“Perfect!”

“Now let’s get out of here before your grandfather comes to get us for dinner.”
